Two big hands lifted her out of the cramped room and squeezed her tight after Connor exited. She had been too afraid to move and stayed stuck in the hole for a few extra moments. âWhat the hell are you doing in there?â
Maia recognized Johnâs voice and squeezed him back.
âHe dragged me in.â
âI know you donât like small places. Were you crying?â John asked. âYour face is red.â
Maia didnât answer but pressed her face into his shoulder. âDo you need to go home?â
âNo.â The prince was closer to them than Maia expected. âShe needs to be debriefed. She knows too much. Probably more than all of us at the moment. Did we catch them?â
âNo, sir. They disappeared. And all our feeds were jammed, so no one got a good look at them,â John answered as he squeezed Maia a little tighter.
âCheck all the wall units and the camera feeds and servers. We must do a manual override if theyâve gotten into our systems.â He turned to John and Maia. All the gentleness was gone from his demeanor and voice. âTake Maia back to the palace.â
âBut⦠No!â Maia tried to get out of Johnâs grip, but he held her firm. She wanted to go home.
âDoesnât matter,â Connor growled, taking charge of the situation. More men with masks arrived, followed by men with dogs. Maia didnât like the dogs. âApparently the men wanted Maia and me to see and hear them. Somehow they didnât disrupt our video feeds like they did yours. Maia knows exactly what they said. She canât leave yet.â
Maia jumped onto John as one of the dogs tried to sniff her and wrapped her arms around his neck.
âGet.â John kept an arm wrapped around Maia as he swatted the large military dogs away.
âI need team Bravo to check the rest of the wall units.â The prince shouted out orders as if he expected people to listen. The men stood at attention. âCharlie unit, look through the students and staff. Canine unit will search the grounds and classrooms. Alpha unit will escort us to the palace. No masks. We need visual confirmation on everyone entering and leaving this school.â
Maia rode in the front of the limo, squeezed in next to John, while Connor rode in the back. At least she thought he was in the back. The dividing screen was up, and she couldnât see him.
Two black SUVs escorted them as they drove through the parking lot. Everything looked normal as the kids waited in the back of the school grounds. They were used to routine checks, and the students didnât seem to notice anything was wrong. The teachers didnât notice either.
âWhy do I have to go to the palace?â Her nerves finally settled as they got farther away from the school.
âWell, first, weâre going to determine if we should treat you as a suspect.â He poked her in the ribs, and she laughed. âThen, we will send in someone to figure out what you know and make sure it lines up with the princeâs story.
